Spies and historiography: the source value of intelligence records

Abstract

Intelligence documents cannot serve as historical sources without knowing the purpose and verification practices of the institution that produced them. Drawing on early twentieth-century intelligence manuals and sixteenth-century Mediterranean networks, the study proposes a method for reading such records.
